Statistics
Our unit is staffed for 7 beds, with the flexibilty to go up to 9 beds during busy Winter periods. In addition, we provide cover for a seperate high dependency unit in the paediatric department.
We admit around 260 - 300 PICU patients per year, of whom around 80% are ventilated. We retrieve 100 - 140 patients per year from DGHs in South and Mid-Wales, and occasionally from South West England.
Staffing
There is always 1 nurse per bed. The medical cover is provided by a team of 6 conusltants and 5 registrars.
Outcomes
We have participated in the national Paediatric Intensive Care Audit Network (PICANET) since it started in late 2003. This allows us to know and compare our standardised mortality ratio (SMR) to other PICUs. Our SMR is 0.6 - 0.65, so well below 1.0, and this compares very well with our peers.
