Ceftriaxone Update
Following an MHRA Drug Safety Update we have reviewed PICU's policy for using ceftriaxone.
Children < 44 weeks corrected gestational age
- Use Cefotaxime
Children > 44 weeks corrected gestational age
- Use Ceftriaxone
- Ceftriaxone should not be given simultaneously with IV calcium containing infusions (e.g calcium gluconate, calcium chloride, Hartmann's) even if given through separate lines. Ceftriaxone and calcium containing solutions may be infused sequentially provided that the infusion line is flushed between solutions or the infusions are given via different lines.
- If patients are on TPN do not use ceftriaxone unless there is no alternative
