Viral laryngotracheobronchitis is a common reason for admission to PICU in the age group 6 months - 5 years, but heavily weighted to the infant end of this age spectrum.
A child admitted to PICU with upper airway obstruction at < 6 months is much more likely to have another cause, and a diagnosis of 'croup' should be regarded with scepticism. This age group will all require ENT investigation to establish a diagnosis
