Status epilepticus in DGH
Status epilepticus is one of the most common diagnoses for patient's coming to our PICU. However, the majority (60%) have a stay of less than 24 hours, and of these most are extubated within 2 - 3 hours of arrival in the unit. We suggest trying to wake and extubate these patients quickly in the local unit if there are no features in the history suggesting there is likely to be an encephalopathy and if the CT scan is normal, as this prevents an unnecessary journey for the patient and their family.
